We want to discover the foods or supplements or “medicines” for a healthier life and a longer life. Unfortunately, there’s no exact science to extending your life span or living a healthy life.
However, there are healthy behaviors that you can incorporate into the way you leave. Some might call these a type of lifestyle medicine, and if you can maintain these behaviors, you’ll at least give yourself a chance to live a long and healthy life.
This may seem obvious, but one of the “medicines” for a healthier life is not taking any medicines or other substances that can become addictive. It’s an easy way to throw both your personal and professional life off course while also wreaking havoc on your body physically. Needless to say, this is easier said than done for some people. The trick is to avoid substances that you know are addictive while also doing everything in moderation, even things that seem harmless like alcohol and caffeine.
Regular Sleep Routine
In many ways, sleep is the best kind of lifestyle medicine. It’s true what they say that a good night of sleep can cure just about anything. Of course, the trick is getting a good night of sleep every night. Teenagers typically require eight to 10 hours of sleep every night while adults require at least seven hours. If you can find a way to get uninterrupted sleep for the requisite number of hours every night, it’ll do wonders for your health and set you up for a longer life.
Sleep is when your cells can repair themselves and function better. There are even studies suggesting that good sleep patterns and seven to eight hours of uninterrupted rest every night can help prevent chronic diseases. Doing so helps your body restore itself, setting up the body to live a long time.
Stay Away from Stress
Again, this seems obvious for the sake of your personal happiness. However, stress can also be detrimental to your physical health. This doesn’t mean you should avoid all forms of stress in your life; that seems impossible. But chronic stress has been linked with several serious diseases.
That includes mental health issues and neurological disorders as well as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and even cancer. The trick is to find ways to relax and relieve any stress in your life. Whether it’s yoga, cognitive therapy, or some other method, if you can reduce the amount of stress in your life, your chances will be better of having a long and healthy life.
You should never doubt the importance of forging good relationships in life. Positive interactions with people and meaningful relationships will do wonders for your mental health, which will then have a positive impact on your physical health. Plus, strong relationships with the people around will make your long life more fulfilling.
There are studies indicating fast cognitive decline, increased risk of mental health issues, and higher morbidity rates can result from those who are socially isolated and don’t have meaningful relationships with friends or family members. While it’s not always universal, people are likely to live longer and healthier lives if they surround themselves with good people and positive relationships.
Not surprisingly, regular exercise is one of the most healthy behaviors for a long life. Of course, staying in shape is an important short-term benefit of performing a daily exercise. But it’s also a critical part of dictating how quickly the body breaks down in the long-term. Your body won’t be so quick to age if you continue to partake in daily physical activity the way a younger person might.
There is evidence that regular exercise can help you stay mentally sharp and improve mental health. But it will also help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses that can reduce your quality of life and cause premature death. Even if it’s not that fun in the short-term, regular exercise is an important part of a long and healthy life.
