Living Longer

Even though the United States of America is #1 spender in the industry of healthcare, they also have a low life expectancy, compared to many other developed nation counterparts. The problem arises with the fact that healthcare may have been doing it wrong for a while.

The Harvard School of Public Health performed a study comparing how life expectancy compares with health habits. This study was a big undertaking, gather over 120,000 participants over a 34-year window. Researchers found that a proper diet, physical activity, body weight, alcohol, and smoking all play a part in life expectancy. So, with this information in mind, how can you live a healthy lifestyle?

Keys To A Longer Life

By living out these five keys to the best of your ability, you will be well on your way to a healthy lifestyle. If you do not follow these guidelines, premature death is imminent. So, let us start with a healthy diet.

#1 – A Proper Diet:

When you have a healthy diet that includes foods like whole grains, nuts, healthy fats, and veggies, to name a few, you help prolong your life. Stay away from processed meats, trans fats, and sodium.

Also, another tip when working on a proper diet is being aware of what good food is at the grocery store. One rule of thumb is only purchasing food that is on the outside of the store. The middle of the grocery store usually has processed, frozen foods that are certainly not good for you.

#2 – Physical Activity:

More keys to a longer life include physical activity. When you have healthy physical activity for around 30 minutes every day, you can give a great lifestyle to your body. Most researchers agree that “moderate to vigorous exercises are best. These exercises could include a brisk walk, running, skiing, swimming, and so much more. Of course, you can do any exercise, but you would have to workout longer to achieve the results to keep you healthy.

#3 – When talking about keys to a longer life

Having an appropriate body weight makes a difference. With most humans ranging at a healthy weight of 18.5 to 24.9, try to find yourself in this category as well. However, your body weight, or body mass index (BMI), has more to do with height and weight.

There is a variety of mechanisms to help you find your BMI, too. There are calipers to do the measuring for you. However, there are even better options like Hydrostatic Weighing and Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, among other things. When doing these tests, you can expect them to be more efficient, but more expensive as well.

#4 – Smoking

Smoking cigarettes have been a long-standing “no-no” in the United States of America. But, in a variety of developing countries, smoking is not perceived as bad for your health. However, with the arrival of electronic cigarettes to the market, consumers are being fooled, thinking that this option is better for them. This fallacy could not be further from the truth. E-cigarettes are still addictive, and medical professions and researchers have not seen the full impact of what they can do negatively on the human body.

#5 – Alcohol Intake

Alcohol is a drug only for moderation. For example, men should only drink between 5 to 30 grams of alcohol per day. In the same token, women should only have 5 to 15 grams per day. To point things into focus, let us say you drink one 12 ounce beer at a restaurant. When you convert the ounces to grams, you have just drunk over 340 grams of alcohol. Even with the most liberal calculations for a male, that is more than you should drink in an entire week.

Fortunately, most alcoholic drinks are not pure alcohol. This example means you can have a 12-ounce beer, a 5-ounce wine, or liquor at 1.5 ounces. Lastly, drinking is not only impacted by gender, but also by the medication you take, your ethnicity, and your age grouping.

Closing Out

So, by living out healthy physical activity and maintaining a healthy diet, you can raise your life expectancy just by the choices you make. Even by cutting out a few alcoholic beverages per month, you could see a mammoth change in the way you feel and look.  Best of luck out there, and stay healthy!
